About Brooks Duncan
Hi there,
Whether you came here via Twitter, Google, Facebook, or anywhere else, you are probably wondering who the heck I am. Here’s what you need to know.
My name is Brooks Duncan. Yes, I know that I have a last name for a first name and a first name for a last name. What can I say.
What The Heck Is Dropping Keys?
Dropping Keys is my personal blog. Since at the time of writing it is July 16, 2010, it means I am quite possibly the last person on Earth to start a personal blog.
The inspiration for the title came from this post by Chris Guillebeau, where he posted this poem by Hafiz, a 14th century Sufi poet:
The small man
Builds cages for everyone
He
Knows.
While the sage,
Who has to duck his head
When the moon is low,
Keeps dropping keys all night long
For the
Beautiful
Rowdy
Prisoners.
That pretty much describes how I have tried to approach my career this far, and my goal for the future is, again as Chris says, to “build fewer cages; drop more keys.”
Where Is Brooks?
I’m based in beautiful Vancouver, BC Canada. I work from my basement (aka The Dungeon).
Brooks’ Background
I have a pretty diverse background. I’ve been an accountant (in fact, I am a Certified Management Accountant), a computer programmer in a small startup, and a client services director in a $13 billion global corporation.
Ever since I was a kid hacking away on an Apple ][+, I’ve been a pretty massive computer geek, but have always had a knack for translating technical mumbo-jumbo into stuff that “normal people” can understand.
What Is Brooks Doing Now?
I’ve left the aforementioned corporate job, and for the last few years I have run the website/consulting business called DocumentSnap.com. I help people (like you?) unclutter and de-stress by turning piles of paper into an organized electronic system.
